Introduction
Every portable player is an argument about the same trade. More conversion means more current, more current means less playing time, and the manufacturer picks a point on that line and ships it. The PD5 hands the decision back.
Inside are 8 Cirrus Logic CS43198 chips. In Quad-DAC mode 4 of them run and the player does up to 28 hours between charges. In Octa-DAC mode all 8 run and you get the full thing, with the battery cost that implies. It's a menu setting, not a purchase decision.
The rest is a modern Astell&Kern: machined aluminium body, full Android with dual-band Wi-Fi so your streaming apps run on the device, Bluetooth 5.3 with aptX HD, LDAC and LHDC, and both a 3.5 mm unbalanced and a 4.4 mm balanced output. There's also EnviroTune, which reads ambient noise and adapts playback for it, which is the feature that matters on a tram rather than a sofa.
Key Features & Benefits
- Switchable Quad and Octa DAC: 8 CS43198 chips, and you choose whether the trip or the track matters more.
- 28 hours on a charge: in Quad-DAC mode, which covers a full day of listening plus the commute home.
- Charges over USB PD 3.0: around 2.5 hours from flat, on the same brick as your laptop.
- EnviroTune: analyses the noise around you and adapts playback so the sound holds together outside a quiet room.
- Full Android, not a locked player: dual-band Wi-Fi and your own streaming apps, alongside local files.
- High-resolution Bluetooth: 5.3 with aptX HD, LDAC and LHDC when the cable stays home.
- Both outputs: 3.5 mm unbalanced and 4.4 mm balanced, so sensitive IEMs and demanding headphones both have a socket.

Who It's For
- Listeners who want a real source on a commute rather than a phone plus a dongle
- Anyone driving IEMs and portable headphones who wants both a 3.5 mm and a balanced 4.4 mm output
- People who stream and keep local files, and don't want two devices for it
Who should look elsewhere:
- Anyone who wants a distraction-free offline player. Full Android is more to manage, not less.
- Desktop-only listeners. At €999 a stationary DAC and amp will do more for the same money if it never leaves the room.

Pros & Cons
✅ Pros:
- Switchable Quad and Octa DAC turns a fixed compromise into a setting
- 28-hour battery in Quad mode, which is a genuine all-day figure
- Both 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm balanced outputs included
- Full Android with dual-band Wi-Fi, so streaming apps run natively
- EnviroTune adapts playback to ambient noise instead of asking you to turn it up
⚠️ Cons:
- The 4.4 mm output needs a compatible balanced cable
- Android brings updates, apps and battery drain that a pure offline player doesn't
- Octa-DAC mode trades away a meaningful part of the 28-hour figure

Final Thoughts
The SR35 was the player people recommended when someone asked for their first serious portable. The PD5 keeps that job and removes its main objection, which was that you had to choose between playing time and the good mode. At €999 it's not an impulse buy, but it's the least compromised way into Astell&Kern right now.
